Having been impressed with a Thorne Research product that helps control my own blood pressure (Perfusia SR L-Arginine), I figured this canine product was worth trying for my beloved 13-year-old terrier when she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Does it work? It may be coincidence, but so far so good: from the first day in mid-2016 that I added Thorne's "Bio-Cardio" to her dinner, she seemed more energetic. The supplement comes in large capsule form, though - not palatable to any dog I have ever met, so I recommend simply twisting the plastic halves off and sprinkling the powder onto wetted kibble or other moist food. (Be sure to always screw the lid on the bottle on tightly to keep the powder in the capsules dry.)Update - Sept 4, 2017. To my veterinarian's pleased surprise, my terrier's heart condition has remained basically stable in the year-plus that she has been on this product (along with the medications he'd prescribed: Vetmedin, enalapril, Lasix). How much of the credit should go to Bio-Cardio? I can't say for sure, but I sure wouldn't chance omitting it.
I am a big fan of Thorne products and use them for myself and my dogs. My 11yo Chihuahua-mix is experiencing congestive heart failure and it seems to rapidly be getting worse. She has been on Bio-Cardio for a little over 3 months now and it's hard to say if it's helped much, but it certainly hasn't hurt. She is on prescription heart meds (Vetmedin, Furosemide, Enalapril) too, and she also has a slew of autoimmune issues, so it's tough to always know what's causing what with her. She had her first vet ER visit a few nights ago due to rapid breathing, wheezing (sounded like pneumonia) and weakness/trembling. They said she's in the later stages of CHF, so they upped the prescription meds. I also give her Thorne: Immugen, SuperEPA Vet, Canine Geriatric Basics, Bacillus Coagulans.
So while I cannot say for sure that this has prevented any further progression of my dogs CHF, it (along with Thorne Research in general) came HIGHLY recommended by my veterinarian. I was originally giving a Hawthorne supplement for heart support after my dog was diagnosed with a minor heart murmur when he was younger. However, once he was diagnosed with a IV grade murmur and it was recommended I start him on this for all around heart support. My dog weighs 12 lbs and the pills are very large so getting him is sort of tricky but as long as I sufficiently disguise them in something he will swallow them most of the time. But just a heads up to other small dog owners - be aware of the capsule size before ordering!
